Recently, one undergraduate student, Tianlang Zhao, from Earth System Modeling Center (ESMC) of NUIST, has been awarded the ‘Finalist’ in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). The MCM is a multi-day mathematics competition held annually in USA which is distinguished from other major mathematical competitions such as Putnam by its strong focus on research, originality, teamwork communication and justification of result.

During January 29 to February 2, 2016, after five days cooperation with other two team members, Jingting Huang and Anjing Huang from NUIST, Zhao’s team solved the Problem D successfully with the help of their supervisor, Wenlong Fei, a faculty from NUIST. Their model can describe the patterns of information flow process and evolution of public opinion very well.

Tianlang Zhao now studies in the College of Atmospheric Science and begins to develop the earth system model under the guidance of Pro. Fei Liu, who leads the Paleoclimate modeling and simulation team of ESMC.
