Second International Symposium on Climate and Earth System Modeling held in NUIST

ByadminMarch 01,2016
The Second International Symposium on Climate and Earth System Modeling was held during 15 to 17 October, 2015

During 15 to 17 October, 2015, the Second International Symposium on Climate and Earth System Modeling was held in the Lecture Hall of the Meteorological Building of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST).

Attendees included dozens of domestic scientists and researchers from research institutes and higher education institutions as well as their foreign counterparts from countries such as United States, Germany, France, ROK, Japan and Norway.

NUIST President Jianqing Jiang, Prof. Bin Wang, Director of the Earth System Modeling Center in NUIST, and Prof. In-Sik Kang from Seoul National University addressed the opening ceremony of the symposium, which aimed to discuss recent advances and current issues covering the development and improvement of Climate System Model (CSM) and Earth System Model (ESM), model diagnostics and application in studying climate variability, climate prediction and predictability, and future climate and environmental change. The main focus of the symposium was on the strategy and methodology for improvement and application of the coupled atmosphere-ocean-land-sea ice climate models.

Prof. Bin Wang and his team have been working on Earth System Model development at NUIST ESMC ever since the release of version 1.0 in 2014. According to them, new and improved physical parameterizations have been incorporated into the atmosphere, land and sea ice components of the V2 model; a comprehensive and quantitative metrics (85 characteristic fields) are set up for evaluation of the model performance against observations and in comparison with the CMIP 5 models; V2 performance is greatly improved. The V2 model is also said to be released soon.
